Many peaceful and crowded demonstrations have taken place at St. Nicholas Cathedral over the years, including the 'prayers for peace' in the 1980s, which contributed to the subsequent changes within East Germany. At more than 800 years old, St. Nicholas Cathedral is filled with ancient features and boasts a huge interior, complete with vaulted ceiling and dramatic pillars. With three naves and a number of Gothic-style chapels, the exterior of the church is a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque architecture.
