Leipzig Museums

Leipzig is a true city of culture and filled with outstanding museums and collections. Many of the best museums in the city are operated by the University of Leipzig and include the Grassimuseum (Grassi Museum), which actual comprises three separate museums, each of which has plenty to offer.
Of particular interest here at the Leipzig Grassimuseum are the 5,000 exhibits at the Museum of Musical Instruments, some of which date back up to 500 years, while the colourful Aboriginal and African displays at the Museum of Ethnology (Museum für Völkerkunde) are also worth looking out for. Home to three separate museum areas, the University of Leipzig's Grassi Museum lies to one side of the Johannisplatz, sandwiched between both the Prager Strasse and the Täubchenweg, east of the Augustusplatz. Dating back to the 1920s and renovated in 2005, this group of Art Deco buildings is home to the Museum of Applied Arts, the Museum of Ethnology and also the impressive Museum of Musical Instruments, each of which has plenty of interesting exhibits to keep you occupied.

Housed within the eye-catching Runde Ecke building (Round Corner), once the headquarters of the secret police, the Stasi Museum remembers the peaceful demonstrations held here in 1989. Many exhibits concentrate on the strict dictatorship, propaganda and surveillance methods, with highlights including a reconstructed prison cell, documents and photos.

Part of the university complex, the Leipzig Museum of Antiquities (Antikenmuseum der Stadt) contains many rather special archaeological treats, including marble and bronze sculptures, ancient pottery and a number of busts. The exhibits number more than 8,000 and are both varied and interesting.

With Leipzig's enormous annual Book Fair attracting huge crowds, the German Museum of Books and Writing fits in well in this literary city. Guided tours are available and led by multilingual staff, offering a good way to learn about the various books, manuscripts and the city's publishing past.

For one of the best insights into the city's past, a visit to the Museum of Local History, otherwise known as the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum, is in order. Various themes are covered and collections displayed, with highlights including pottery dating back to the 1300s, and many interesting regional artefacts, which number more than 200,000. The main exhibits are to be found within the Old Town Hall, although the nearby modern Neubau (Annexe) off the Böttchergässchen also hosts a number of special exhibitions.

Home to a particularly impressive collection of Egyptian artefacts, the Museum of Egyptology is part of the University of Leipzig complex. With almost 10,000 historical artefacts and treasures from all over Egypt, this collection is amongst the best of its kind in the whole of Europe. Expect to see a number of Nubian art works, decorative sarcophagi and stone vessels dating back to the early part of the third millennium BC.
