Sited within the state of Saxony and on the eastern side of central Germany, the city of Leipzig has a population of more than 500,000 people. The biggest city within Saxony, Leipzig stands at the meeting point of the Parthe River, the Pleisse River and also the White Elster River.

Founded more than 1,000 years ago, Leipzig is home to a prominent and extremely historic university complex, which was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. Now home to around 30,000 students, Leipzig University is one of the oldest universities in the whole of Europe.
